pastel #4, pastel on paper, 11 by 8, c.1922
The collection of 24 pastels by John Pierce Barnes serves as a looking glass into the life of an early 20th century Pennsylvania Academy student. They are also a study of themes of the Pennsylvania and New Hope Impressionists. The pastels were created by Barnes in Bucks, Chester and Delaware County in the 1920s and several are done on sandpaper. Barnes exhibited pastels at the 20th Annual Philadelphia Water Color and Miniature Exhibition in 1922. -Kathryn Scimone Stanko
